After around a decade teaching English in schools — from Year 7 through to A-Level — Lottie now works one-to-one with students who need more targeted, personalised support than a classroom can offer.
Why she became an English teacher
Lottie's love of English began well before any career decisions were made. An English Literature degree gave her the analytical framework and the deep reading habits that good teaching requires — but it was the classroom that showed her what she most wanted to do with those skills: help young people discover that they were more capable than they thought.
Why confidence matters
In her experience as a classroom teacher, Lottie noticed that underperformance was rarely down to a lack of intelligence. More often, it was a lack of confidence — a belief that English was somehow a subject you either got or you didn't. One of the things she most enjoys about one-to-one teaching is the chance to dismantle that belief properly, question by question, draft by draft.
Why capable students underperform in exams
Exam technique is genuinely teachable — and it's one of the areas Lottie focuses on most. Students who struggle in exams often know more than their marks suggest. The problem is usually timing, question order, planning, or not quite understanding what the examiner is looking for. These are skills, not mysteries, and with practice they can be significantly improved.

English as a living subject
Lottie has a particular enthusiasm for Shakespeare — she has visited Shakespeare's Birthplace, attended performances at the Globe, and spent time at literary landmarks across the country. This isn't just biographical colour. It reflects a genuine belief that literature matters, and that enthusiasm for the subject is part of what makes teaching it well possible.
Experience and background
- Approximately 10 years' experience as an English teacher
- English Literature degree
- Teaching experience from KS3 through GCSE and A-Level
- Familiar with AQA and Pearson Edexcel exam boards
- Experience supporting SEND learners and adapting teaching approaches
- Comfortable working with home educated students
Teaching philosophy
Lottie's approach is not simply to help a student complete their homework. She wants them to develop the skills, understanding and confidence that allow them to become more independent learners — the kind who can face an exam paper without needing someone to talk them through it.
